The island country of Niue has managed to remain pollution free do to the lack of public transport system. The country’s miniscule population does not justify having a public transportation system.
The main connection road on Niue is the ring road which covers almost 50 kilometer out of the islands circumference of 60 kilometers and touches all the 14 villages of Niue and the Capital Alofi. The ring road is metaled road where as the other sea and bush tracks are unmettaled. For tourists hiring of cars, bikes or cycles is recommended.
The airport of Niue – Hanan International Airport is 5 kilometers south of Alofi and almost all hotels provide a pickup service to the airport. Even a few taxis operate on the island. There a few vehicle rental companies providing cars, bikes and bicycles on hire to the visitors.
The authorities of Niue welcome the use of cycles as they are non-polluting in nature. Most natives use mountain bikes or at the most motor bikes. With the minimum traffic on road, the island is a biker’s heaven and a paradise for cyclist. No doubt the heat is there but the sea breeze makes it very pleasant to cycle all your way through the villages on a bike. In the season you can even coast along the avenues of fragrant scented frangipani.
The mix of metaled roads and the dirt tracks with its low traffic and courteous drivers in Niue makes it the biker’s paradise. When the heat takes over just go for a dive near by. All hotels and motels offer their guest free bikes to move around and if none is available free, you can always hire one. In case you are fun loving, fit and raring to go Niue has an annual race which runs through the ring road. Usually time for this race is September every year.
