Scuba Diving in Niue

Niue is best unpolluted place for scuba diving in the world as at places the island suddenly drops in the ocean. It is a very short distance to swim from the coves or the beach to reach the drop off.  Scuba diving has its own pleasures and the scuba gear is available for hire throughout the year. A dive after a very heavy rain will give you a pleasant surplices as you can feel the fresh cool water gushing into the ocean from the natural fissures in the limestone crust of the island.

The scuba dives at Niue are simply wonderful due to t clarity of the water and the underwater visibility which often reaches 70 metes. A clear visibility of 30-40 meter is very common. The water temperatures are also very pleasant and comfortable for the scuba divers.  The clear water offers underwater photographers a unique opportunity to shoot marine life with ease. Even a novice photographer would get good results.

In their endeavor to protect the reef the villages have allowed only traditional methods of fishing. This has allowed the diverse marine life to survive in plentiful all across the coast line of the island. As the Niuean reef is directly opening into the Pacific Ocean, it is mostly hard corals. So you need to be careful while diving.  One of the interesting creatures you will encounter in a dive is the Niuean Sea Snake which is very timid by nature, usually found sleeping or feeding amongst the corals. Apart from these, you will encounter other marine life form ranging from ribbon eels, sea perch, lion fish, parrot fish and even the white tip reef sharks.

There are many dive sites in Niue which are usually accessible by a 10 minute boat ride. The sites are located where you can visit the caves and coves and the pristine white hard corals. All the caves are naturally lit up and no special techniques are required to explore them. The dives are not more than 30 meters deep.
