About Niue

The island of Niue is one of the smallest island countries in the Pacific Ocean. It is a small and beautiful country, friendly in nature and now emerging as a major tourist stop in the Pacific Ocean.  The climate of Niue is at it best during the months of May to October, while the months of December to March should be avoided do to recurring and regular cyclones. Niue got its name from Captain James Cook who some how misinterpreted the native language and called it the ‘Savage Islands’ where as the natives call it as the ‘Rock’ which in the native language means ‘behold a coconut’.

The full name of the country is Niue pronounced as “New-ay” with its capital being the city of Alofi. The area of the island is a mere 259 square kilometer or about 100 square miles. While protestant Christians from 75% of the population, and rest are other sects. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as its official currency. The daytime temperatures vary from 27 degree C from May to October and at about 30degree C from November to April. Humidity is always very high in this island nation but the sea breezes never lest you feel stuffy. There are very heavy rains during October to April and even cyclonic storms are quite frequent in these months.
